Product details

The textbook develops methods for design research, as designing both requires and generates knowledge, which often occurs intuitively in practice. However, when the generation of this knowledge is guided and reflected upon methodically, it strengthens the design discipline and promotes its interdisciplinary networking. Ethnography is a suitable method for this purpose: design ethnography means that a designer immerses herself in a social environment, observes and analyzes specific aspects of reality, and alters them— for example, through intervention and participatory approaches. When such processes are documented and theoretically reflected upon, design-specific modes of understanding become visible. The content includes: the blind spot, everyday life and intersubjectivity, design research: immersion and intervention, abduction: mapped exploratory journeys, methods and aspirations.
