Product details

Visionary architectural and urban designs as solutions to new societal challenges - this was the mission of the GEAM (Groupe d'Études d'Architecture Mobile). Its founding in 1958 marked the beginning of a wave of conceptual architectures that would reach its peak in the late 1960s. The group advocated for a "mobile" architecture that could be flexibly adapted to the needs of its inhabitants, initially in response to the end of the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM), which was increasingly viewed with skepticism by younger architects. The criticism of the GEAM, whose key representatives included Yona Friedman, Frei Otto, and Werner Ruhnau, was less about breaking with CIAM principles and more about renewing conceptual approaches. In this way, the GEAM occupies a pivotal position where the visionary emerges from the modern.
