In 2003, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched an internationally supported program aimed at preserving traditions and crafts through an agreement. The goal is to raise awareness of the non-material aspects of culture, similar to the well-known UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Special traditions are designated with the label of "intangible cultural heritage," thereby gaining global attention. At the national level, such as in Switzerland since 2008, traditions are also being highlighted. This creates clear connections to tourism: unique features are emphasized, traditions are presented as the epitome of the "authentic," and corresponding travel offers are marketed. It may therefore come as no surprise that the history of traditions and that of tourism are intertwined.
