Did you know that an apple is treated with pesticides an average of 31 times? That you can also come into contact with these toxins on an airplane, and that besides agriculture, the second largest consumer of herbicides in Germany is Deutsche Bahn? Pesticides are used extensively, yet we know little about their composition. About forty chemicals classified by the WHO as probably carcinogenic are still permitted. A quarter of the pesticides on the market are counterfeit with uncertain contents. Johann G. Zaller, an ecology expert at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, has been researching chemicals and their side effects on our health and the environment for years.
