A comprehensive analysis of the status of the German language in Africa has not been available until now. This work fills that gap. It presents the status of German against the backdrop of educational and language policy conditions, as well as German foreign cultural policy in Africa. The situation of German is considered in both school and higher education settings, as well as in extracurricular contexts. The author pursues two main objectives with this book: First, to provide a cross-country overview of the status of the German language in Africa, which is also supported by a detailed statistical section. Second, the country reports, structured as handbook articles, aim to shed light on the status of German in individual African states. The work concludes with an extensive research bibliography.
