The book examines the construction of regional identity(ies) in the County of Bentheim from 1866 to 1918. In 1866, the region, which had been an independent territory for centuries as an imperial county, was ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia. It illustrates which aspects designated as regional specifics of the County of Bentheim were used during this period to construct region-related identity(ies) and how they were perceived by the Bentheim population, thereby influencing the self-identification of large parts of the population. It highlights that it was primarily the shared history of the once-independent imperial county of Bentheim, the Reformed confession of the majority population, the linguistic affinity to Dutch, the influence of its border location, and the associated economic and personal ties with the Netherlands, as well as the princely house as a socially significant symbol of original sovereignty and regional traditions, that were deemed relevant. Furthermore, it also examines the measures taken to harmonize these regional identity(ies) with a (Prussian) state and (German) national identity in the sense of multiple identity(ies).
