The standard work on German orders and decorations has been developed for decades by Jörg Nimmergut together with his wife Anke. Nimmergut, born in 1939 in Berlin and the first recipient of the von-Hessenthal Prize, is a historian and specialist journalist for orders and decorations. He studied education in Berlin as well as Romance languages and German studies in Munich. Through nearly 70 book publications, a large part of which focuses on orders and decorations, including the five-volume work "German Orders and Decorations until 1945," he has become a recognized expert in this field. Nimmergut worked as a director, conservator, and curator at the German Orders Museum, served for 15 years as a publicly appointed and sworn expert on German orders and decorations, and is a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Society for Orders Research. In addition to book publications, he was also the editor-in-chief of renowned German orders and militaria magazines. He has received numerous awards and honorary memberships both in Germany and abroad.
