The 'German Legends' are, after the famous 'Children's and Household Tales', the second major collection by the Brothers Grimm and are considered the most significant compilation of their kind. Whether it's Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Heinrich the Lion, or the Singer's War at Wartburg, whether the tales of the thousand-year-old rosebush, the Binger Mouse Tower, the Pied Piper of Hamelin, or how Luther threw the inkwell at the devil's head: for ten years, the brothers collected and ultimately selected 585 legends of various origins, some of which trace back to a storytelling tradition of over 1500 years. The work was published in two volumes in 1816/1818. It remains an inexhaustible treasure trove and a valuable reading book to this day.
