This thesis examines the American weekly magazine The New Yorker over nearly its entire publication period to determine whether and which German and Yiddish words of German origin are used. It observes the areas to which these words can be assigned, why and in what form they were used by the authors, who these authors are, and whether a tendency towards increased use of German words in American English can be identified through this investigation. At the beginning of the work, there is an overview of the history of Germans in the USA and New York. Following this, the magazine The New Yorker is introduced to provide the reader with a better understanding of the examined corpus and to allow them to classify the relevant texts both thematically and stylistically.
