Bibliothek der Frühen Neuzeit - Leinen (Band 12): Froschmeuseler
German, Georg Rollenhagen, 1989Product details
For a long time, the comical Greek epic "Batrachomyomachia," known as the 'Battle of the Frogs and Mice,' was considered a work of Homer. The most clever German-language adaptation of this source is Georg Rollenhagen's "Froschmeuseler." With an exceedingly charming technique of nesting and digression, in over 20,000 German rhymed verses, this learned humanist, theologian, philologist, physician, and astronomer transformed the literary parody into an encyclopedic work. He addressed issues of individual lifestyle, state order, and international relations. For the first time, the annotated edition from the Deutsche Klassiker Verlag offers the complete text, including the framing texts and illustrations, based on the final edition from 1608. This provides the most reliable foundation for understanding the most extensive and multifaceted German animal epic.
