Product details

The poetry of the late medieval period in Germany has long remained, and largely still does, in the shadow of the classical Minnesang and the song poetry of Walther von der Vogelweide. In fact, it builds upon the poetic traditions of around 1200, varying and breaking them, playing with them, and developing entirely new themes and forms. From the rich abundance of this late song production, a representative selection is offered here, a collection of texts that is worth discovering even for the non-specialist. This volume follows the "Deutsche Lyrik des frühen und hohen Mittelalters" by Margherita Kuhn and Ingrid Kasten, which was already published by the Deutscher Klassiker Verlag. It initially revisits the classical period of courtly lyricism around 1200. The range of poets then spans from Neidhart to Oswald von Wolkenstein, each with their own profile. Expressions of passion, arrogance, and fear stand alongside cleverly packaged didacticism, delicate eroticism next to the obscene, praise of princes alongside satirical social criticism, and virtuosic wordplay next to simple testimonies of new piety. The texts have largely been newly worked from the manuscripts. The translations aim for readability without flattening the linguistic boldness and ambiguous uncertainties of the original texts. The commentary provides the necessary information on authors, transmission, forms, themes, and difficult passages. This is a bilingual edition: the Middle High German texts with modern German translations.
