The lyric poetry of the late medieval period in Germany long remained overshadowed by the classical Minnesang and the sayings of Walther von der Vogelweide. In fact, it builds upon the poetic traditions of around 1200, varying and breaking them, playing with them, and developing entirely new themes and forms: expressions of passion, arrogance, and fear stand alongside witty didacticism and delicate eroticism, praise of princes next to satirical social criticism, virtuosic wordplay next to poetics and testimonies of a new piety.
