Georg Büchner has remained the most unsettling and thus the most contemporary German classic of the 19th century: His social and aesthetic questions reach far into our time. This multifaceted and compelling work has been examined and evaluated from various perspectives: His author has been seen as a social revolutionary and as a Jacobin, as a contrasting figure between sobriety and pathos. His nihilism and pessimism have been highlighted, as well as the religious and metaphysical dimensions of his poetry, writings, and letters. For this edition, all texts have been newly edited based on the manuscripts and first prints. The research of recent decades has been utilized for text creation and commentary. This has resulted in an edition that has not existed before in such accuracy and completeness.
