With the "Fantasiestücke," his first book publication, Hoffmann not only explored new content and themes in narrative art but also found new forms of representation: a "fantastic" storytelling style characterized from the outset by the art of composition from the most heterogeneous elements, self-reflection, irony, and humor. Stories about artistic figures and music are at the center of this collection, along with an initial night piece, a satire, and the art fairy tale "The Golden Pot," one of the most significant works in the history of the genre. This edition offers, in addition to the "Fantasiestücke," other important contemporaneous works: music-critical writings as well as the political pamphlet "The Vision on the Battlefield near Dresden." It includes an extensive commentary and the political caricatures that Hoffmann created as the only one.
