Goethe's "Italian Journey" is not only one of the poet's most famous works, but it is also considered one of the most significant travelogues in world literature. However, Goethe's life theme of 'Italy' can be understood not only through the (seemingly) homogeneous artwork of the "Italian Journey." A multitude of literary forms surrounds this main work: the travel diary for Frau von Stein, essays, collections, notes, drafts, and schemes. They provide visible evidence that Italy did not become merely an artwork and myth for Goethe. These texts are also included in the two-volume edition: edited and elucidated from first prints and manuscripts through a comprehensive commentary.
