Eichendorff's poems are among the most well-known works of German Romanticism; many of them are firmly anchored in the collective memory. Yet, this has not led to a better understanding of them: they have often been dismissed as harmless songs of wandering students, mere depictions of nature and moods. However, it is now understood that the recurring images of forest and homeland carry a deeper significance, and that complex symbols are hidden behind the formulaic expressions of this poetry. This edition presents for the first time the complete poetry of the poet - including the verse epics - in chronological order: both in the original form of the first prints and in all later versions. A comprehensive commentary elucidates the work.
