Grimmelshausen himself understood his narrative main works as a cycle of ten books. The present volume contains Courasche, Springinsfeld, and both parts of the Wonderful Bird's Nest. Simplicissimus is the connecting figure of these works, no longer an hermit in Springinsfeld and in the Bird's Nest I, but a socially engaged, satirical writer. Through the shift in perspective, the cycle also presents the delusions of its first-person characters; the narrators of the Bird's Nest novels expand this variety of perspectives by incorporating the viewpoints of ordinary readers of the time on the contemporary "upside-down world." As a bonus, the volume includes the Rathstübel Plutonis. Like the first, this volume also offers critically revised texts with the necessary linguistic explanations and comments for today's understanding.
