Jewish-Christian book illumination in the late Middle Ages

Product details
Illuminated Hebrew manuscripts from the 15th century are vibrant witnesses to interreligious collaboration between Jewish and Christian book painters. Trained Jewish scribes, known as Soferim, wrote the text on the parchment pages. The illustrations were then executed by book painters, who did not necessarily have to be Jewish. With the help of a Jewish advisor, Christians could also insert the illustrations at the appropriate places in the text. Franziska Amirov presents the joint work of Jews and Christians on Jewish manuscripts in detail for the first time. Numerous illustrations highlight the Jewish-Christian exchange of motifs and styles during their collaborative efforts.
