Product details

Four artworks created between 1470 and 1490 in leading workshops of Strasbourg art form an previously unrecognized memorial ensemble for the Lichtenberg family, which died out in 1480. The author explores the locations as well as the context, program, and dating of each work. Originally, these pieces adorned the choir and the adjacent burial chapel of the Lichtenbergers in the St. Adelphus collegiate church in Neuweiler. The sequence of images on the Adelphus tapestries was designed around 1470, likely by the Jost Haller workshop. The Holy Sepulchre uniquely combines in Upper Rhine art the Easter image of the three women with the Pietà motif; it is attributed to the followers of Niklaus Gerhaert, as is the high tomb of Ludwig V. A stained glass painting from the circle of Peter Hemmel of Andlau portrays the last two Lichtenbergers alongside their ancestral figures Hanau-Lichtenberg as pilgrims.
