The Middle Ages are commonly regarded as a barren period, limited to biblical references, when it comes to the European reception of Ancient Egypt. "In Terra Aegypti" sheds light on this previously underexplored territory and follows the transmission and development of late antique texts, as well as the dissemination of facts and legends about Ancient Egypt. A rich treasure trove of historiographical, poetic, and theological texts reveals a surprising diversity of knowledge about Egyptian pharaohs, gods, and monuments, which unfolds in coherent or even conflicting traditions. Sesostris, the world ruler, and Isis, the patroness of horticulture, are as much a part of the medieval worldview of Egypt as a hovering Apis bull, the astronomical canon tables, and the pyramid tombs of Giza.
