Product details

As a child in Jerusalem during the 1940s, Amos Oz experiences the hatred towards Germany as something absolute and unchangeable. The Germans are murderers, their language and products are condemned, and the reparations agreement of 1952 is still regarded as a disgrace. In every passport of the young state, it states "Valid for all countries - except Germany." Yet there are the books, the literature; he reads and the whole country reads Lenz, Böll, Grass, and a transformation takes place, both on a small scale and a large scale, within him and within the state of Israel. Amos Oz combines personal experiences with historical and political reflection. In this way, he provides an impressive assessment of the anything but normal relationship between the two nations. A book about Germany, about Israel, about the more than sixty-year process of understanding. And at the same time, a plea for bridges.
