Little is known about the living conditions and work experiences of deaconess sisters in the GDR. This study is based on interviews with women who worked there as members of a Protestant nursing organization. Sisters from very different fields of activity share their experiences from the post-war years up to the reunification in 1989. It is an important contribution to the history of nursing, diaconal historical research, and the everyday history of the GDR.
