In the early twentieth century, Saichi Sugimoto, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War, searches the wilderness of Hokkaido for a hidden gold treasure. Armed with only a cryptic map and accompanied by a local Ainu girl, Saichi must also confront every murderous villain, bandit, and outlaw who knows about the treasure!

Tetsuzo Nihei, the legendary bear killer, is determined to become the hunter who kills Retar, the last remaining Ezo wolf. Asirpa will never allow this, and she and the immortal Sugimoto rush to stop his bloodthirsty hunt. Meanwhile, Hijikata, the relentless leader of the reborn Shinsengumi, leads a group of death-row inmates against Lt. Tsurumi and his 7th Division in the port city of Otaru. In this battle of iron wills, only the strongest will survive.
