Doodles seem to be a phenomenon of the peripheral. Neither image nor writing, text nor sign, they evade clear classifications and fascinate with their affective-dynamic as well as epistemic potential. Often described with terms of deficiency, the formlessness of scrawled lines continually prompts engagement with them anew: they appear as riddles, byproducts, and nuclei of creativity all at once. The contributions in this volume deal with concrete doodle material from visual arts, literature, dance, and science, in order to revisit the familiar categories of writing, image, text, and sign from this perspective – effectively doodling over them.
