In 20th-century Nietzsche research, the theme of the animal has largely been overlooked. In this book, Vanessa Lemm systematically addresses the role of the animal in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. She demonstrates that the animal is neither a subordinate theme nor a purely metaphorical device, but rather stands at the center of Nietzsche's renewal of the practice and significance of philosophy itself. By understanding the antagonism between civilization and culture as a fundamental element in Nietzsche's conception of humanity and its becoming, Lemm offers a new approach to the significance of Nietzsche's political philosophy and presents him as a thinker of an emancipatory and affirmative biopolitics.
