Product details

The categorical imperative is one of those philosophical terms that has made its way into everyday language. Inevitably, this has distanced it from its original intention. Do we really know with Kant that there is a moral law behind this imperative? This is precisely what Jean-Luc Nancy repeatedly questions in the essays gathered here, referencing Nietzsche, Derrida, and others. What do we truly recognize when the blinders of epistemology and ethics have fallen away? It is not about morality. It is about something that obligates us, that makes us beings who ought to be: a law before any law that is imposed upon us and to which we are subjected. And if there is nothing behind this pre-imposed law but - nothing? The engagement with Kant's ethics is a facet of Nancy's philosophy that has yet to be fully recognized.
