The film was still too young in the early 1940s to have a substantial body of literature regarding its history and the various societal, technical, or economic manifestations. However, during World War II, newspaper and film scholar Hans Traub set out to create a dictionary of film. Since 1936, he had been leading the Ufa teaching exhibition on the studio grounds in Babelsberg. The following year, he lost his university teaching authorization because he was considered a second-degree mixed-race by the National Socialists. With his dictionary, Traub pursued an ambitious project, but the war-related destruction of part of the proof sheets in the Leipzig printing house and his early death in 1943 prevented its publication. As a fragment, the work is preserved in the collections of the German Kinemathek and allows for an understanding of the state of German film studies at that time.
