For almost five hundred and fifty years, the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg has shaped the city and region. Founded in the late Middle Ages with four faculties, it has evolved into a modern university with nearly 20,000 students and 15 faculties at the beginning of the new millennium, offering a wide range of subjects. Views and insights into its eventful history, university life, ceremonial events, and occurrences, compiled into a small photo album by students, professors, and their university, illustrate the transformation of a small, picturesque Austrian-Baden university into a mass educational institution by the end of the 20th century. University archivist Dieter Speck paints a sympathetic picture of the Freiburg university with more than 200 images.
