Strange and semi-mythical, almost like a romantic reminiscence from long-ago times, the patriarchal Alpine economy reaches into our modern century. While we see farmers in the lowlands actively and successfully participating in the advancements of modern inventions and discoveries in the fields of chemistry, mechanics, and physics, it does not occur to many that there exists, not far from those railways and that pressing urban life, a rural world that is, in a sense, still on the historically second cultural level of societal development. Yet precisely because Alpine life in the alpine huts is something unusual and foreign, those who have not yet visited the Alps are drawn to the romance of the landscape and the magnificent impressions of the Alpine world.
