New churches were built in towns, villages, and monasteries. All five bishop churches in the region of Switzerland (Basel, Chur, Geneva, Lausanne, Sion) were rebuilt in the second half of the 12th century. Alongside the fully developed repertoire of Romanesque forms, the transition to Gothic was already becoming evident. The Romanesque style can be found in Switzerland, among other places, in the Basel Minster, the Cathedral of Our Lady in Sion, the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in Chur, and the Cathedral of St. Peter in Geneva. The Minster of All Saints in Schaffhausen is considered today to be the largest Romanesque sacred building in Switzerland. Lenzburg Castle is one of the oldest and most significant hilltop castles in Switzerland.
