Ilfa Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov traveled across America for three months: from October 1935 to January 1936, from east to west and back again. Their mouse-gray Ford car took them 16,000 kilometers through several hundred cities. They encountered Native Americans, spoke with young unemployed individuals, old capitalists, radical intellectuals, and revolutionary workers, as well as poets, writers, and engineers. They visited cultural, social, and industrial institutions and photographed with their Leica camera at the peak of photographic art of their time. Their America was an everyday one: the single-story America, precisely observed and described by Ilf and Petrov, illustrated in the style of a classic photo report—with curiosity, insight, and irony. Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Yevgeny Petrov (1903-1942) collaborated in the 1920s with Mikhail Bulgakov and Yuri Olesha on satirical works.
