A case study in the 22nd century: The crew of the six-thousand passenger spaceship consists of human and humanoid employees whose task is to investigate productivity. When a series of strange objects from the planet New Discovery are brought on board, they awaken forgotten feelings among the crew. The structure on board begins to falter: both human and humanoid employees start to long for warmth and intimacy, dreaming of the deceased, shopping, and raising children. Gradually, the crew members begin to see their work in a new light. They all must ultimately confront the question of whether they can continue as they have been.
