In his second work, the Acts of the Apostles, Luke proves to be a brilliant historian, just as he is in the Gospel named after him. At the same time, he masterfully employs a common literary device of the time - literary symmetry. David Gooding (1925-2019), who was a professor of Old Testament Greek at Queen's University Belfast, demonstrates in this work that Luke has convincingly managed to combine this device of symmetry with the selection of his material in the Acts of the Apostles. He shows that the author of this biblical book does not describe the all-encompassing spread of the Gospel in the known world of that time, but rather focuses primarily on the ministries of Peter, Philip, and Paul. Background information about Judaism and certain pagan concepts, as they were particularly reflected in Greek philosophy at the time, facilitates access to the message that Luke has left us. A work that challenges us to continue the mission entrusted to all his followers by Jesus Christ, the risen and exalted Lord.
