Product details

Containerization has evolved significantly over the past few decades and has become the primary means of transport for general cargo and high-value industrial goods. The growth of containerization corresponds to the development of the facilities designed for its handling, the container terminals. However, due to their nature and their critical role in the industry, these facilities are vulnerable to security threats. Against this backdrop, the International Maritime Organization introduced regulations on verified gross mass in July 2016 to control the weighing of containers and minimize security risks. In this context, this study developed a questionnaire, with the fundamental approach of obtaining responses from a wide range of stakeholders. This allowed us to gather information on this topic from various sectors with different perceptions within the container freight industry, in order to assess the impact of the VGM regulations on the operation of a container terminal and the yard strategy, to examine changes in security procedures, analyze current practices, and formulate recommendations.
