The Book of Confession by Adrienne von Speyr is one of her most central works. It revolves around the act and attitude of confession, the personal and ecclesial-sacramental encounter between sinner and God, and that complete openness which is the prerequisite for all grace, all mission, and all prayer. The new understanding of confession presented in this book is based on a trinitarian and particularly christological foundation. The Cross (and in it, the entire incarnation of the Son) is the archetypal confession; thus, the Christian-sacramental confession is, in the strictest sense, a following of Christ. The rich fertility of this dogmatic foundation unfolds in the present work - less as a closed system and more as a multitude of inspirations. From the trinitarian-christological foundation arises necessarily the broad exploration of the ecclesial dimension: here the author engages with contemporary dogmatic and historical discussions, into which she innovatively and fruitfully intervenes through her own fundamental ideas.
