Summary:
The intention of this new translation is to provide an easily readable version of this central work of the Church Father that is neither rhetorically inflated nor dryly scholarly, at a price affordable for everyone. Augustine's Confessions form the key to his entire theological oeuvre, representing the existential starting point. One would misunderstand the book if it were not taken as what the title indicates: a praise to God, who has brought Augustine from the darkness of his errors into the light, and on the occasion of this prayer, also a general confession of his past and his still present faults. The last three books, which are essential for understanding, expand the perspective of the confessor into a hymn of praise for all of creation and ultimately for the "second creation," the Church, where Augustine, who wrote the work as a bishop, has found his spiritual home.
