Among Fichte's attempts to present his thinking in an understandable way, this work published in 1800 is one of the most coherent and insightful. However, it faced vehement criticism from contemporaries. Hegel even saw it as a particularly illustrative text demonstrating the untenability of the position held by Fichte in the Science of Knowledge, which is based on the I as an act of will. Therefore, the mere reading of Fichte's determination of man and its critical reception in Hegel's Faith and Knowledge provides insight into the reasons why, until the 20th century, Fichte's philosophy was largely regarded as a curious mosaic piece on the path "From Kant to Hegel" or, more accurately in relation to the "endpoint" of this path, in the "development of Spinozism." A new perspective becomes clear.
