Since the reunification, there have been two to three times more right-wing propaganda and violent acts in the new federal states relative to the population than in the West. This phenomenon can largely be attributed to the glaring deficiencies of the GDR system. The SED established an antifascism that turned a blind eye to the increasingly threatening expansion of anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi phenomena, masking latent and manifest anti-Semitism with the ideology of anti-Zionism. Additionally, the denazification in the Soviet Zone/GDR was, similar to West Germany, superficial and was halted too quickly. Harry Waibel documents these and other deficiencies based on approximately 7,000 verbal or written attacks by neo-Nazis or anti-Semites in the GDR and propagandistic glorifications of Nazi Greater Germany.
