Product details

The widely celebrated first of May is preceded by Walpurgis Night, the most cheerful celebration of nature – the ruinous night of witches. In its original meaning, the virgin May Queen Walburg enters our village from the fresh green of the groves, welcomed and cheered by the children bearing May flowers. In Christianity, she transforms into a terrifying queen of the night on a dark mountain height, brewing hail and storms, blight and plague, holding unchaste dances of Satan, and becoming an enemy of growth and procreation. What a contrast within such a short time and what a pairing of the block witch and the church saint under the same name! And Walburg is not the only one to experience this. The following investigation reveals the connection between these separate, seemingly contradictory halves of an originally unified being.
