Product details

Attacks on refugee accommodations, racist assaults of both physical and verbal nature, political measures that allow others to die, blanket judgments about the collective backwardness of others, as well as the perception and experience of the danger posed by their bodies. The current media, political, and everyday treatment of flight and migration has made open racism socially acceptable again in Europe. This also relies on the demonization of the imagined "Other," which serves to preserve both material and symbolic privileges. Because the "Others" are seen as demonic and uncontrolled, this perhaps simplest analytical formula suggests that we are entitled to protect ourselves and our privileges from them. The contributions in this volume critically clarify these relationships regarding racism and contradict them.
