Product details

The garden city is originally a model of planned urban development designed by the Briton Ebenezer Howard in 1898 in England, in response to the poor living conditions and the horrendously rising land prices in rapidly growing cities. The garden city idea also found strong resonance in Germany, where similar concepts had been developed as early as the mid-19th century with the establishment of large villa colonies for the bourgeoisie (Marienthal in Hamburg, Lichterfelde-West, Alsen, and later Grunewald in Berlin, villa districts in Dresden). In Germany, with the advancing industrialization and in response to the problems and needs of workers, non-profit housing companies emerged starting in 1900. In 1902, the German Garden City Society was founded in Berlin. Lectures and slide shows helped spread the garden city idea. A magazine called Gartenstadt was also published. Hellerau (since 1950 a district of Dresden) was planned from 1906 and built from 1909, becoming the first, as well as the most complete and radical realization of a garden city in Germany. With the festival hall later shaped by Gret Palucca and the German workshops, the place also gained early significance as a cultural center. Illustrated with 90 black-and-white images, plans, and panels. Reprint of the original edition from 1911.
