Address books are much more than just a reference work for finding people, their names, and residential addresses in a city or municipality. They often provide additional information about the history, the inhabitants, and their social environment in a specific area. The term historical address books should not only be understood in its current meaning, as the origins of books containing names and supplementary information date back to around 1700 for the residence city of Dresden, and the term address book was not yet in use at that time. We first encounter this term in the Address Directory of Dresden in 1804. Alongside these address directories and address calendars, the so-called court and state calendars from 1728 are also a very good source for the history of our city, Dresden.
