During World War I, the German Empire was visited by three Martians. This is staged in a now-forgotten film from 1916: The Discovery of Germany by the Martians. This was not only the first official propaganda film during the war for the domestic audience and neutral countries but also a very early and yet non-canonical science fiction film. It features news monitoring on Mars, speechwriters, and space travel, as well as interludes reminiscent of fairy tales and romance films. The book explores the tangled web of stories that the screenplay by the Jewish lawyer Richard Otto Frankfurter unfolds. Fragments from the archives complement the volume and provide, nearly a hundred years later, insight into the connection between film and propaganda.
