Product details

Since the industrial revolution, there have been authors who express their visions of the future in anti-utopian forms. Today, it seems that in the Western industrialized nations, we are far removed from the horror scenarios envisioned by most anti-utopians. Nevertheless, it is important to reconsider the taken-for-granted habits of our "carefree" lives. When looking beyond our own horizons, many real existing examples of totalitarian governments can currently be observed, exercising repressive social control and oppression in ways that could not be more exemplarily depicted in anti-utopian novels. Through three selected literary examples created over several decades, Julia Hachtel explores the development of the anti-utopian novel from 1932 to the present. The author analyzes Aldous Huxley's classic.
