Born into a bourgeois family in the provinces, likely as the illegitimate child of a playwright, Marie Gouze, known as Olympe de Gouges, navigated the second half of the 18th century as few women did. As a writer and committed polemicist, she distinguishes herself through her independent spirit and the sometimes radical originality of her viewpoints. She advocates for the abolition of slavery and, in particular, for the civil and political rights of women. Due to her rejection of Robespierre and the defenders of the Revolution, she is guillotined during the Reign of Terror. Catel and Bocquet depict her life in a novelistic yet historically precise manner.
