Anthropological-theological framework for the history of the midwifery profession. Hanna Strack, the long-time editor and publisher of the Women's Church Calendar, restores the spiritual significance of the creative process of giving birth, presenting childbirth as a moment of women's strength. She develops a theology of birth based on the experiences of midwives and identifies what the church could gain from this: a broader image of God, if women's and bodily experiences are deemed worthy symbols of the divine. This is accompanied by new blessing liturgies and meditative texts that honor women as co-creators.
