With his poems, which he published in Vienna before the turn of the century under the pseudonym Loris, the young Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874-1929) had become the "idol of a generation," as Rudolf Borchardt put it with admiration. The first lyrical attempts are indebted to the spirit of Nietzsche, but Hofmannsthal quickly finds his own unique tone. The first collection of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's poems was published in 1907 by Insel Verlag Leipzig, where the following collections of poems were also published during Hofmannsthal's lifetime in 1911 and 1922.
