Product details

Who doesn't know Winnetou, the noble chief of the Apaches? Karl May, along with numerous television and film adaptations, has made him popular while simultaneously creating a powerful distorted image. But who were the Apaches really, and who were their most important leaders? After an introduction to the world of the Apaches, the narrative shows how their lives in the 19th century unfolded under Spanish, then Mexican, and finally American rule. Four chiefs of the Chiricahua Apaches stand up against the foreign powers: Mangas Coloradas, Cochise, Victorio, and Geronimo. Their biographies tell stories of broken promises, land theft, and betrayal. However, the Apaches also raid, kidnap, and kill. Yet, there are also respectful encounters between the enemies, and occasionally even friendships. Ultimately, though, the Apaches must give up their free way of life.
