Quentin Massys' Annunciation Altarpiece from 1509 appears as traditional as it is venerable. However, embedded in the celebration of the lineage of Saint Anne are two innovations that refer to social and media historical upheavals around 1500: the emergence of the nuclear family and a rhetorically sophisticated culture of seeing. The study approaches Massys' first major commission through a detailed analysis, making it a starting point for family and media historical investigations. Starting from the paradoxical constellation that the motif of the Holy Family becomes particularly popular at a time when the significance of the nuclear family is increasing, Holger Kuhn questions changed family models, the transformation of father and mother roles, and the relationship between sexual reproduction and monetary liquidity. Additionally, the study sheds new light on the transition from triptychs to panel paintings. It draws a connection between recent research on the media history of foldable image carriers and early modern image rhetoric. Massys experiments with a culture of seeing in the medium of the triptych, which complements the mechanical mobility of the image fields with that of the gaze. The rhetorical turns of Antwerp painting after 1500 become readable as symptoms of departed media configurations.
