In the debate over the religious and ideological consequences of Darwinism in Germany, the polemics and discussions surrounding the Jena zoologist Ernst Haeckel, his works, their content, and illustrations hold a prominent position. The present study demonstrates how the accusation arose that Haeckel had committed scientific forgery and uncovers the causes of this in both scientific and non-scientific literature.
